Forum Title: Prednisone Dosage Confusion

Posted by: SunnyDays42
Date: January 15, 2023

Hi everyone,

Im new to this forum and Ive been prescribed prednisone for my asthma. My doctor gave me a prescription that starts with a high dose, then gradually decreases over time. The thing is, I don't fully understand the dosing schedule or why it's like that.

Can anyone explain how this works? Also, are there any side effects I should be aware of during this tapering process?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi SunnyDays42,

Welcome to the forum! Its great that youre taking an active interest in understanding your medication.

Prednisone is a corticosteroid often used to treat inflammatory conditions like asthma. The initial high dose is usually given to quickly reduce inflammation and control symptoms effectively.

The tapering schedule, where the dosage gradually decreases over time, helps prevent potential side effects that can occur when you suddenly stop taking prednisone. These include things like fatigue, muscle weakness, joint pain, and even mood changes.

Your doctor will provide a specific schedule tailored to your needs, but generally, it might look something like starting with 60 mg daily for the first few days, then gradually reducing to 40 mg, then 20 mg, and so on until youre off completely. This can take several weeks or even months depending on how long youve been taking higher doses.

Do let me know if this helps, or if there are other aspects of your treatment that you're unsure about!

Hi DrSmoothie,

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! It really helped clarify things for me.

Just one more question: How do I know if my tapering schedule is too fast or slow? Should I adjust it based on how I feel?

Thanks again!

Hi SunnyDays42,

Youre welcome! Its good that you're thinking about this carefully.

The tapering schedule should be adjusted based on medical advice rather than just how you feel. However, if you experience any discomfort or worsening of your symptoms as you reduce the dosage, it might indicate that the taper is too fast for you. In such cases, it's important to consult with your healthcare provider to adjust the schedule accordingly.

They may recommend slowing down the tapering process to avoid potential relapses or side effects. Your doctor will consider various factors like how long you've been on prednisone and the severity of your condition when deciding the pace of reduction.

Always communicate openly with your doctor about any concerns or symptoms you experience during this period. They are there to ensure that the tapering process is safe and effective for you.

Feel free to reach out if you have more questions!

Ive been through a similar process with prednisone for my rheumatoid arthritis. Just wanted to add that it can be emotionally and physically challenging at times, but sticking closely to the tapering schedule really helps.
