Thread Title: Prednisone for My Dog - Dosage Questions
BarkBuddy:
Hi everyone! I'm new here. My dog, Max, has been prescribed prednisone 5mg by our vet. He's a Golden Retriever and he weighs about 70lbs (32kg). The vet recommended giving him one tablet twice daily. However, the label on the prescription says to give it once per day for dogs his size. I'm not sure what to do here. Has anyone else had experience with this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
PawsomePet:
Hi BarkBuddy! Welcome to the forum. It sounds like you're in a tricky spot with Max's prednisone dosage. Since your vet suggested giving it twice daily, but the label says once per day, I'd definitely reach out to your vet for clarification. Vets sometimes adjust dosages based on individual cases or specific conditions. In the meantime, follow their advice until they can give you a more detailed explanation.
BarkBuddy:
Thanks PawsomePet! I'll call my vet later today. Its just that Max has been dealing with some skin issues and allergies, so I'm worried about messing up his medication schedule.
PawPatrol89:
Hey BarkBuddy! My dog also had to take prednisone for a similar reasona really bad allergic reaction. Our vet initially prescribed it twice daily as well. It's important not to deviate from the dosage your vet gave you until they say otherwise. They know best and have probably adjusted the dose based on Maxs specific condition.
BarkBuddy:
Thanks, PawPatrol89! That helps a lot. I'm definitely going to call my vet first thing tomorrow morning. Just hoping it's not too serious if Ive been following their advice so far.
FurEverFriends:
Hi BarkBuddy! It's great that you're reaching out for clarification. For our dog, we had similar concerns but our vet explained that the initial dosage was to get on top of the inflammation quickly and then they would adjust it as needed. Its crucial to follow your vets instructions until you can get more guidance.
BarkBuddy:
Thanks everyone! I really appreciate all the advice. Ill call my vet tomorrow to make sure everything is correct for Max's dosage. It just feels better knowing that others have gone through similar situations and found their way with their pet's health.
PawsomePet:

Thread Update:
BarkBuddy:
Hey guys, just wanted to update you on Max's situation. My vet called me back today and explained that due to the severity of his skin condition, they initially prescribed a higher dosage to control the inflammation quickly. They said after a week or so, we can switch it to once daily as per the label instructions. So far, Max is doing much better! Thanks again for all your support!
PawsomePet:
