Hi everyone,
I've been struggling with severe acne for years now. My doctor suggested I try Roaccutane as a last resort because nothing else has worked so far. I'm a bit nervous about the side effects and was hoping someone could share their experience or advice.
Thanks in advance!

Hey SleepySloth123,
I completely understand your concerns. I took Roaccutane a few years ago for my severe cystic acne. It was life-changing in terms of clearing up my skin, but there were definitely some side effects.
The most common ones include dry skin, lips, and eyes. You might also experience mood changes or have trouble with digestion. However, it's important to know that these are usually manageable if you follow the doctor's instructions closely.
Did your doctor go over all the possible risks and precautions?

Thanks for replying, HealthyHippo. Yes, my doctor did mention some of these side effects but they didn't seem as severe compared to what I've read online.
I'm worried about the long-term effects and whether it's safe for me in general. What do you think?

Hi SleepySloth123,
I see that HealthyHippo has already given some helpful insights into your concerns. I'm a dermatologist and can provide you with more detailed information about Roaccutane (isotretinoin).
Roaccutane is indeed an effective treatment for severe acne, but it does come with potential side effects. It's crucial to understand the benefits and risks thoroughly before starting the medication.
Benefits:- Long-term improvement in skin health- Reduction or elimination of cystic and nodular acne
Risks and Side Effects:- Dryness (skin, lips, eyes)- Potential mood changes- Increased sun sensitivity- Liver function abnormalities- Joint pain- Elevated cholesterol levels
It's important to have regular check-ups with your doctor while on the medication. They will monitor for any adverse effects and make necessary adjustments.
For long-term safety, most patients tolerate Roaccutane well if they follow precautions and attend scheduled appointments. However, it is not recommended for pregnant women due to potential fetal risks.
If you're still hesitant, discuss other treatment options with your dermatologist as well. They can offer a comprehensive plan tailored to your needs.

Thanks so much for the detailed information, DrSmiley. It helps to have a clearer picture of what I might be getting into. My doctor did mention following up regularly.
I think it would also help if you could suggest some tips on managing the side effects, especially dryness and mood changes?

For the dryness, I found using a good moisturizer several times a day really helpful. Look for products that are fragrance-free and hypoallergenic. For your lips, use a thick lip balm with SPF to protect them from drying out.
Mood changes can be tricky. It's important to stay connected with friends and family, keep up with activities you enjoy, and try some relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation if you feel down. If the mood swings become severe, talk to your doctor right away.
Also, make sure you're eating well and getting enough sleepit really helps with managing overall health while on Roaccutane.

Great tips from HealthyHippo! I'd add:
- Use a humidifier at home to keep the air moist and help prevent dryness.
- Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
- Avoid harsh soaps or detergents that can irritate your skin.
Regarding mood changes, it's vital to maintain an open line of communication with your doctor. If you feel like your emotions are getting out of control or you're experiencing persistent sadness, anxiety, or irritability, please let them know immediately. They might recommend additional support or adjustments in the medication if necessary.
Remember, Roaccutane can be extremely effective for severe acne when used correctly and monitored closely by a healthcare professional. It's important to weigh the benefits against the risks but stay proactive about managing any side effects.
If you have more questions, feel free to ask!
