Forum Topic: Can I Get Prednisone Over The Counter?
Post from Sunshine42
Hey everyone,
I've been feeling really under the weather lately. My allergies have gotten way worse than usual this season. A friend of mine mentioned that prednisone helped her a lot when she had severe allergy symptoms. Is it possible to get prednisone over-the-counter, or do I need a prescription? Thanks for any advice!

Hi Sunshine42,
Thank you for your question. Prednisone is a type of steroid medication and its generally not available over the counter (OTC). You will definitely need a prescription to obtain this medication.
Prednisone is typically used to treat various conditions, including severe allergies, asthma attacks, inflammatory disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, and certain autoimmune diseases. It's quite powerful and can have serious side effects if not taken correctly or under medical supervision.
If you are experiencing severe allergy symptoms, it would be wise to visit a healthcare provider who can assess your condition and prescribe the appropriate treatment. They might also recommend other over-the-counter antihistamines or nasal sprays that could help manage your symptoms more effectively in the short term until you get a proper evaluation.
Please don't hesitate to seek professional advice for your health concerns!

You're welcome, Sunshine42!
Prednisone is a strong medication with the potential for several side effects. Here are some common ones:
- Gastrointestinal Issues: Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and ulcers.
- Mood Changes: Irritability, anxiety, or even depression.
- Fluid Retention: Swelling in your ankles, feet, and hands due to fluid retention.
- Weight Gain: Prednisone can cause weight gain, particularly around the face and abdomen.
- Sleep Disturbances: Insomnia or difficulty staying asleep.
- Increased Appetite: You might experience an increased appetite.
- Bone Loss: Long-term use of prednisone can lead to bone density loss.
Additionally, there are more serious side effects that you should be aware of:- Increased risk of infections due to its immune-suppressing properties.- Elevated blood sugar levels (can exacerbate or trigger diabetes).- Eye problems such as increased intraocular pressure or cataracts with long-term use.
Its crucial to discuss all these potential side effects with your healthcare provider. They will weigh the benefits against any risks and monitor you closely if they decide to prescribe prednisone.
Remember, always take medications exactly as prescribed by a doctor and never share them with others. If you experience any severe side effects while on prednisone, contact your doctor right away.
