Hi everyone,
I've been taking Propecia (finasteride) for the past year and have seen some good results in slowing my hair loss. I'm considering ordering a year's supply to save money and avoid running out. Does anyone know if there are any risks or benefits of doing this? Also, would love to hear from Dr. WiseOwl on this topic!
Thanks in advance,CuriousCat

Hi CuriousCat,
Thank you for your question. It's a smart idea to consider ordering a years supply of Propecia if it works well for you and your doctor has approved its long-term use.
Here are some points to consider:
Pros of Ordering a Yearly Supply:- Convenience: You won't have to worry about refilling or running out, which can be a significant benefit.- Cost Savings: Sometimes pharmacies offer discounts or better rates when you buy in larger quantities.- Consistency: Maintaining the same dosage and brand ensures consistency, which is important for effective treatment.
Potential Risks:- Drug Interactions: Ensure that there are no new medications or changes to your health status that might interact with Propecia. It's crucial to discuss any new prescriptions or supplements you start taking.- Storage Conditions: Make sure the medication is stored properly, in a cool, dry place away from moisture and heat.- Side Effects Monitoring: Even if you've been on Propecia for some time, its essential to monitor your body for any side effects. If anything changes, contact your doctor immediately.
It's also important to have regular check-ups with your dermatologist or healthcare provider to ensure the medication continues to be effective and safe for you.
If you're confident in the benefits and discuss these points with your physician, ordering a years supply can indeed be practical.

Thank you so much, Dr. WiseOwl! That's exactly the information I was looking for. I'll definitely discuss it with my dermatologist before making a decision.
I also wanted to ask if there are any alternative treatments or supplements that could be used in conjunction with Propecia? My doctor mentioned something about using minoxidil too, but I'm not sure how effective it would be combined with finasteride.
Thanks again for your help!

Hi CuriousCat,
You're welcome! It's always good to have a thorough discussion with your doctor before making any changes to your treatment plan.
Regarding combining treatments:
Minoxidil (Rogaine):- Effectiveness: Minoxidil is often used in conjunction with Propecia because it works on different mechanisms. While finasteride inhibits the production of DHT, minoxidil stimulates hair growth and improves blood flow to the scalp.- Combined Use: Studies have shown that combining both medications can lead to better outcomes than using either one alone. However, this combination isnt for everyone; some people may experience side effects or might find it too expensive.
Supplements:- Biotin (Vitamin H): While not directly linked with hair growth, biotin supports overall health and well-being.- Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fish oil supplements, these can help support scalp health.- Zinc and Iron Supplements: Deficiencies in these minerals have been associated with hair loss; ensuring adequate intake might be beneficial.
Important Considerations:- Always consult your doctor before starting any new supplement or medication. This is to ensure there are no interactions and that the combination suits your specific needs.- Regular monitoring of side effects and progress is essential when combining treatments.
In summary, combining Propecia with minoxidil can indeed be beneficial for some individuals. Supplements should be taken under medical guidance to avoid potential issues.
